About Piraeus

Piraeus is the ancient port of Athens, the home of Greek shipping, and is the largest passenger port in Europe, carrying over 20 million passengers a year on dozens of routes serving the many Greek islands and beyond. Combined with the excellent train, plane and road connections, Piraeus is one of the major transport hubs in Greece.

The ancient Athenians selected Piraeus, about 12 km away from the city center, to be the main port of the city state in early 4th century BC thanks to its optimal location and the fortunes of the port and city have been interlinked ever since. In modern times the port began to grow again in the 19th century once Athens was declared the capital of Greece, and is now a large, vibrant city and a major commercial center. Besides the port Piraeus is renowned for its taverns and restaurants, attracting many visitors thanks to their excellent cuisine including local seafood specialties, as well as for sport, with the biggest local club, Olympiacos, being the most successful Greek football side.
