About Barcelona

Barcelona's ferry port is one of the largest and most important in the Mediterranean, with many ferries departing every day as well as regular cruise ship arrivals. The ports is located right in the heart of the city near Las Ramblas and many of the favourite tourist destinations.

A truly global location, Barcelona is the 2nd largest city in Spain and capital of Catalonia. It is located in the "comarca" of Barcelonès, along the Mediterranean coast. Barcelona is an economic, financial and cultural centre, and a destination famous for its electric nightlife, shopping, beaches, cuisine, football and parks. Thanks to its wonderful climate and these many cultural offerings, Barcelona is perennially one of the most popular destinations in Europe.

Barcelona is also rightly renowned for its unique contemporary architecture and the iconic works of the architect Antoni Gaudí. His most famous work is the huge (yet unfinished) temple of the Sagrada Família, billed for completion in 2026. Other examples of his work are the Palau Güell, the Park Güell, the Casa Milà (La Pedrera) and the Casa Batlló. Barcelona is home to many beautiful parks and beaches, an array of museums, galleries and music venues and countless restaurants, as well as Las Ramblas, the most lively street in the city and the many fascinating side streets leading from it.

    Barcelona - Palma- Barcelona
    • Barcelona to Palma with Trasmediterranea

Unfortunately there were no cabins available but as it's only a short overnight that was easily coped with by using a sleeping bag and finding a place to sleep. The bad point is that the vessel was hardly adequate for an overnight crossing. The male toilets (only two of them) were totally overused and became disgusting. There was no soap and no hot water, really not good enough. On the day journey I asked about this and the receptionist made calls but nothing was done. However, the crew and catering staff were thoroughly efficient and friendly.

    OK but has been better.
    • Barcelona to Mahon with Trasmediterranea

The crossing should have been underway by 10pm and the check in assistant said we would commence boarding at 9pm to 9.30pm but boarding did not begin until 10.15pm. After a days travelling this felt like a long wait. We have done this crossing quite a few times and always have a cabin which is generally well appointed, bottles of water, towelling robes, slippers, comfort blankets and so on but this time although the beds were clean and comfortable there were none of these touches. However, the ferry got us to our destination quickly and quietly which is after all the main thing. I cannot comment on the quality of the onboard catering as we did not sample it but I saw quite a few people going towards the restaurant area so I assume the food was palatable at the least.

    • Barcelona to Civitavecchia with Grimaldi Lines

Unfortunately the directions to the ferry terminal and check in instructions when you get there were limited and there was nothing specific for a caravan which would have been useful. We had also expected a roll on and roll off ferry and were horrified to see coach and lorry drivers reversing on. We were instructed to drive on but were then concerned about reversing off in Rome. i must say the crew were clearly very experienced and helpful speaking English and helping me reverse off telling me to turn left or right as required. Having now experienced the ferry crossing i would recommend it to all and would be happy to use it and other crossings abroad again. We booked a cabin suite which was great to have some space to ourselves.
